FURTHER to your article on Coldridge's campaign to save Devon's mobile library service in the August 17 issue of the “Crediton Courier”, here in Zeal Monachorum we have also been getting a visit from the mobile every four weeks and all those I've spoken to are very disappointed that, yet again, it is under threat.
Five years ago I responded to a County Council consultation on removing the mobile service.
The questions were worded to be completely biased against the provision of the mobiles.
Then our community had a partial victory in losing the stop at the top of the hill but keeping the other.
In the years before that other efforts were made by the County Council to reduce or get rid of the service.
I am shocked that this year's consultation will not take the views of under 18s into account - ridiculous - library services are for all ages and can be transformative for young people.
It was clear at the start of the consultation that the decision was already made.
The visit to Zeal Monachorum by the August mobile was a great example of why the mobile libraries and books are so beneficial.
As well as nine adults, six children came (more than usual because it was the school holidays) and delighted us all by their bounce and enthusiasm for books, exclaiming with joy over old favourites and new discoveries, sharing what they liked with the rest of us, before dragging a good haul up the hill.
The adults also get more than books out the experience, catching up with people who might live close by but don’t necessarily see.
Sometimes it’s not good news but at least hearing it in person means sympathy and offers of help can be made.
The mobile library closure will be a significant loss to our community.
I fully support Coldridge's efforts but the energy necessary to fight these cuts yet again is wearing to say the least.
