MOLDOVA is the poorest country in Eastern Europe and at this time of year the temperature can go as low as minus 40 degrees.

Each year I collect empty shoe boxes which I fill with essential and fun gift items for children in the country.

The shoe boxes are taken to Moldova by Hugh Scudder of Christian Response of Kennford, near Exeter, towards the end of November, with his team of helpers.

Hugh knows the country well, and the children all call him Uncle Hugh.

He says that most children only get a shoe box at Christmas, as they are all so poor.

He also sends regular newsletters and photos of the children receiving their boxes.

I would really like some more shoe boxes which I can then fill with items.

So if anyone has a spare shoe box I shall be most grateful.
