IN response to the excellent letter by Mike Baldwin (“They all deserve to have a future”, “Courier”, November 7) about the planet for future generations I can completely agree.

Our younger generations of today will quite rightly ask “Why did you do nothing?”.

Sadly, some of our politicians who have the power to influence policy decisions are not taking the climate crises seriously.

Our own MP Mel Stride for Central Devon has voted against any changes to reduce fossil fuels being a keen proponent of increasing fossil fuel extraction.

The climate and nature crises are deeply interconnected - and we can’t address one, without addressing the other.

It’s for this reason that a joined-up legislation to finally break the damaging silos that are holding back real action. The Climate and Nature Bill (CAN Bill) is trying to do just that.

I have sent the following letter to Mel Stride, who as an elected MP, has a duty to represent his constituents: “I'm writing to you as your constituent and as a supporter of the Climate and Nature Bill (or 'CAN Bill').

“As you know, the climate and nature crises fuel one another, and as one of the world's most nature-depleted countries, the UK Government must increase its ambition and action in line with the science.

“The CAN Bill offers an evidence-led statutory framework that follows the best-available science, integrates our climate and nature policies, and locks into law the UK's international climate and biodiversity obligations (that Conservative Governments signed in Paris at COP21 and Kunming-Montreal at CBD COP15).

“It's our duty to protect our natural inheritance for generations to come. Protecting the beauty of our landscapes and the richness of our biodiversity is not just a responsibility; it is a core value that defines our commitment to preserving life itself.

“The CAN Bill is supported by over 1,000 of the UK's most eminent climate scientists, ecologists and conservationists, who have published an open letter calling on all MPs to follow the science - and pass a Climate and Nature Act - here: https://www.zerohour.uk/can-bill-letter .

“That's why, as your constituent, and as a local voter, I'm asking you to hold the Government to account to deliver the ambition and action we need to see. Will you add your name in support of the CAN Bill? I look forward to hearing from you”.

So far I have not had any response. It is sad that he does not use his power as an MP to help deliver positive results for the future of our planet.

His rural constituency has a lot to lose with the existing climate and nature crises. Perhaps if enough constituents email or tweet Mel Stride then maybe he will take notice.

If nothing else at least it will show him how many people care about our environment.
