A WELL-read toad paid a visit to Crediton Library earlier this week, checking out some of the books and even disappearing into the Crediton Library Self Service machine!

Fortunately, he wasn’t joined by his “Wind in the Willows” friends, Mole, Ratty and Badger, but he did enjoy an encounter with his local newspaper, the Crediton Courier.

Crediton Library Supervisor, Sue Lee, told the Courier: “On Monday morning a member of the public pointed to a brown object on the brown carpet thinking it was a large spider.

“Surprisingly, when it started to move, it was actually a toad.

“Library First Assistant, Beth took a photo of the toad and a video while I went to get a newspaper (the Crediton Courier, of course) to safely remove the toad.

“However, the toad disappeared through a small slit at the bottom of a self service machine.

“I took the front off the machine and the toad emerged 10 minutes later so she could safely remove it to the Crediton Library Community Garden. She had to move quickly as the toad was rapidly climbing up the‘Courier’.

There have been questions asked as to how the toad accessed the Library but it is believed to have come from the neighbouring Mid Devon District Council-owned Newcombes Meadow park.

Have you seen the toad which enjoyed some time at Crediton Library?  We really do wonder which books he/she might have wanted to read? Any suggestions? Email: [email protected] with your suggestions!
