A NUMBER of Crediton businesses and individuals have been experiencing some prolonged periods without internet in the town during the last four days.
Many say they are losing valuable trade or unable to attend on-line meetings.
Some residents say that their services run via the internet such as telephone lines and television channels are also not working as a result.
The cut in service is affecting people using different internet providers, including BT, Starlink, Sky, Virgin, TalkTalk, Plusnet, NOW amongst others.
Crediton Town Council office and Crediton Library has experienced periods without internet, severely disrupting the work they do and the services they offer.
Many people have said the internet works for a couple of hours and then goes off again.
Crediton Town Council took to social media and said earlier today, Wednesday, September 18: “Our phone lines and internet are down but we’re here in the office until 2pm.
“We can also check Facebook messages if you can’t get here in person.”
Julie Farrell said: “It is not fun when you are running an online business.
“It has been like this for three days.
“In all the years in Crediton it’s not been as bad as this.”
David Hughes said on Facebook: “There are loads of roads being dug up in the area at the moment and am guessing that’s where the issues lie.”
He added: “I spoke to a BT surveyor outside my house yesterday off the square and he said they are going to be laying updated fibre optic cabling in the coming days/weeks+.
“With other areas being dug up there will be issues for the foreseeable future sadly.”
Other people have taken to Facebook and said that some notice would have been appreciated.
Some people have said that Openreach and the installation of the new Virgin or O2 cabling could be behind the reason for the issues.
One person said: “I’ve noticed that Virgin and O2 are putting down super fast broadband by the park!
“Wonder if they’ve broken EE broadband while digging up?”
Another person said: The outages are due to Virgin media with new fibre optic cables.
“Bringing Crediton up to speed with the rest of the country. Hope it’s completed soon, they said should be all sorted today.”
Other people suggest that people should contact their provider to see if some compensation could be available.
