“FOR a Better Future” is this year’s theme for Holocaust Memorial Day, taking place this month on Monday, January 27.
Events to mark the occasion, including talks, reflections, a human rights trail and a candle lighting ceremony will be taking place across the city.
This year’s Holocaust Memorial Day marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
The day gets underway at 10am with an opening ceremony at Exeter Cathedral. This will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Kevin Mitchell, and other dignitaries, student ambassadors and primary school choirs.
“Catherine Duleep Singh: The Sikh Princess who helped Jewish families escape Nazi Germany”, is a talk by Chaz Singh at 10.35am in the Cathedral.
At 10.45am, Professor David Tollerton gives a talk about the new Centre for Interdisciplinary Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
This is followed at 10.55am with Reflections on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz/Birkenau.
Both events are at the Cathedral.
At nearby Southernhay United Reformed Church, at 11.30am there is a talk: “A Kindertransport Child, the story of Otto Deutsch”, by Stewart Raine of the Jewish Community.
This is followed at 12.40pm by a film and talk by Lizzie Small of the Romany Community, showing “Porrajmos”, the Nazi genocide of the Gypsy, Roma and Sinti peoples.
At 1.20pm, David Tollerton of the University of Exeter gives a talk: “The Roots of the Holocaust”.
The day finishes at 3pm with a closing ceremony at Exeter’s historic Guildhall, with reflections and candle lighting led by the Jewish Community.
There will also be a human rights trail, a self-guided tour through Exeter’s multi-coloured history.
