MID Devon District Council has welcomed the Government’s recent funding pledge to help address traffic problems in Cullompton.

The Government is increasing funding for some existing major road networks as part of its Network North programme and has announced Cullompton’s Junction 28 on the M5 was included in the nationwide improvement scheme.

The announcement is very timely as work is already underway to develop solutions to address capacity restrictions at the junction and the surrounding road network.

This national programme also includes the Government’s commitment to deliver the Cullompton Railway Station, which was also announced recently.

Welcoming the Government’s funding announcement, Councillor Steve Keable, Mid Devon District Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Regeneration said: “This news is most welcome as Cullompton is badly in need of infrastructure investment.

"We have been working in partnership with Devon County Council and National Highways to develop potential options to address problems at the motorway junction, supported by funding from Homes England.

"We look forward to working closely with the relevant Government agencies to learn more about the Network North programme and how and when it will enable these crucial infrastructure improvements to be delivered.”

When delivered, along with the Town Centre Relief Road, it is expected that the motorway junction improvements at Cullompton will significantly increase capacity on the strategic road network, address congestion and relieve local traffic pressures within the town centre.

The improvements will also facilitate the future growth of the Culm Garden Village to the east of the M5, supporting the delivery of new homes, community facilities and business accommodation in a sustainable and highly accessible location within the district.
