MID Devon District Council has been awarded £671,000 in government funding as part of the Devon and Torbay devolution deal.

Part of a wider £16 million package, the new funding will enable the council to provide net-zero carbon accommodation for young care-leavers in Mid Devon.

The funding has been put toward four self-contained, one-bed units within the district.

The new homes will “ensure an inclusive and supportive environment for young people as they transition out of the care system”, providing "secure, long-term housing options for care leavers, reducing the risk of homelessness and encouraging successful integration into the community,” the council said.

Councillor Simon Clist (Lib Dem, Upper Culm), Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Assets and Property, said: “We are thrilled to receive this funding to provide purpose-built, energy efficient and net-zero homes for young care-leavers.

“This investment will make a real difference in supporting young people in Mid Devon, giving them the resources and stability they need to thrive in our local communities.

“It’s a fantastic example of how devolution funding can drive positive local projects, aligning with our goals for sustainable development and meaningful community support.”
