THERE were no spare seats at a concert performed by the Crediton Singers at the Elephant on the Green in Crediton on Sunday, September 8.

Choir member Alison Orchard said: “Judging by the enthusiastic applause, the audience much appreciated an eclectic mix of songs: from 60s favourites; through choral pieces by Bob Chilcott; to African Gospel.”

She continued: “They were very ably supported by their musical director, Tim Matthews, who played dance music composed by a friend, as well as pieces by Scarlatti and Bach on the piano.

“Octavia Lee, a young and talented local musician, delighted everyone with three upbeat tunes played either on her recorder or her flute (the latter of which she’s only been learning for six months!).

“All were agreed that Octavia should have a glittering musical career ahead of her.

“There was a long interval! This gave concert goers and choir members alike time to enjoy tea and a plethora of home made cakes!”

Alison explains that the concert was free but the audience members showed how impressed they were by giving donations and a total of £185 was raised in aid of Hospiscare; a charity which funds not only the Hospice in Exeter, but also local Hospice nurses.

She continued: “The Crediton Singers are proud of the funds they have raised for various charities over the years by doing something they love; singing, chatting and eating cake!

“They meet every Monday evening - and even through the holidays - at 7pm at The Elephant on the Green.

“It’s a friendly choir, so if you fancy having fun and boosting your immune system all at the same time, do come along; you won’t have to take an audition and you would be very warmly welcomed. If you’d like to check anything out before arriving, get in touch by email on: [email protected]

Alison concluded: “The choir has already started to prepare for its Christmas concert (which will be at the Methodist Church in Crediton in December) by learning some Christmassy songs; it feels a little unseasonal for them at the moment… but, by all accounts, Tesco beat them to it!”
