THE people of Crediton can be proud.
Hundreds of people from across the town took part in a national applause of thanks for health workers helping in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
One whole street, every single person living in George Hill, stood to give applause or bash pots and pans to make as much noise as possible.
George Hill resident Dee Saunders, who messaged all her neighbours, led the riot of noise of support.
Afterwards she said she was thrilled that everyone took part.
All observed the strict regulations currently in place and stood on their doorsteps or property.
In other parts of Crediton children enjoyed shouting and clapping and banging drums and pots and pans.
A loud firework also boomed across the town during the applause effort.
Firefighters at Crediton Fire Station stood in front of a Crediton fire engine, with blue lights flashing, and gave their round of applause.
In rural areas near Crediton, many people also took part in the round of applause, some saying that they found it emotional.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak stood outside No 10 Downing Street to give applause, Boris shouting "Thank you" and how proud he was of the NHS.
The gesture of thanks to frontline staff from everyone across the UK
Members of the Royal family took part.
One local resident commented: "Really strong cheers and clapping as well as plenty of saucepans bashed in our neighbourhood to support the care workers."
The organisers of the Clap for Carers campaign, which was started online, said it was being staged because "during these unprecedented times, (NHS staff) need to know we are grateful".
A number of national landmarks were lit up especially to say thank you.
