CENTRAL Devon MP Mel Stride was treated to a tour of the Museum of Dartmoor Life in Okehampton on Friday, March 24, ahead of its official opening for the year on Monday, March 27.

Featuring special new exhibitions such as the Royal Society funded Dyeing on Dartmoor, the museum takes visitors on an extraordinary journey through Dartmoor’s history from the Bronze Age to the mid-20th Century. 

With interactive displays and activities designed for children, the museum welcomes visitors of all ages.

Entry is just £5 for adults and £3 for children, with family and group discounts available. Visitors are then welcome to return as many times as they like for the rest of the year free-of-charge.

Mr Stride, an avid historian and qualified tour guide of some of the UK’s most famous landmarks, said: “If you haven’t been to The Museum of Dartmoor Life in Okehampton, make sure you pay a visit this year.

"The fantastic displays and exhibitions really bring Dartmoor’s rich and colourful past to life. Every visit also helps to fund the vital work that the museum does in preserving Dartmoor’s history and heritage.”

Manager and curator Kristy Turner, who showed Mel around, said: “As well as our historic displays, we have some new exhibitions our regular visitors will not have seen before.

The Museum of Dartmoor Life opened to the public in 1981.

The museum premises consist of a three-storey former warehouse/mill and two ranges of buildings which were originally used for domestic and industrial purposes, all of which date from the early 19th century.
