THIS May, following success at the Edinburgh Fringe, Yucca Dance presents a powerful new triple bill—culminating in “In the Round”, an original dance theatre work that explores the universal symbolism of circles across cultures.

One half of the duo is Luca Vaccari, who grew up in Crediton and began performing with Crediton Youth Theatre and QE Theatre Academy.

After studying dance and choreography at Falmouth University, Luca continued to develop his practice in Germany and Scotland.

It was in Edinburgh that he met Yuxi Jiang, a dance PhD student originally trained in Chinese traditional dance.

Together they formed Yucca Dance and co-choreographed In the Round.

“Within circles, everything is interconnected—mirroring our modern lives: a labyrinth with no clear exit, direction, or conclusion. Yet through other lenses, circles hold new meanings.”

In the Round weaves a rich cultural tapestry, blending Chinese traditional dance with Western contemporary movement. The piece features music from Japanese art-pop duo dip in the pool, alongside dance film and verbatim sound in 24 languages.

Yucca Dance was supported by the Keep It Fringe Fund and a successful crowdfunding campaign—many of the donors coming from the Mid Devon community.

In the Round will be performed at Crediton Arts Centre, East Street, Crediton on Friday and Saturday, May 16 and 17.

For Luca, this marks a joyful homecoming—to share his work with the community that nurtured him. For Yuxi, it’s an opportunity to discover the warmth and spirit of Mid Devon.
