AN exhibition of art by a local man can be viewed at Redlands Surgery in Crediton until April 26.

Justin Beament (83), who paints using acrylics on canvas, has lived in the Crediton area for the past 48 years.

His exhibition of more than 25 paintings at Redlands Surgery brightens up both of the waiting room areas and and another corridor.

The collection on display includes images from Scotland and the Lake District, mainly landscape images but also other interesting subjects and scenes.

Justin was born in Cambridge but educated in Canada and the USA.

He attended Fisher Park High School in Ottawa and spent two years apprenticing in cash bronze and aluminium sculpture with the sculptor Arthur Price.

In 1963 he moved to the UK and studied Graphic design at Colchester Institute, going on to do a Post NDD course at London College of Printing, now the University of the Arts, London.

He worked in the design studio of a television station before working at Granada Group headquarters in London on various design projects.

He then became Senior Designer at Advertising and Design Associates before becoming a teacher of Typographic Design at Norwich School of Art. He was appointed Senior Lecturer at the age of 28.

In 1977 he and his family moved to the South Wet where Justin taught Typographic Design at Exeter College of Art and Design.

He carried on a design practice throughout working for Exeter Cathedral, Manchester Cathedral, Exeter Civic Society, the Local Government Chronicle and other commissions.

Justin retired from what was now the University of Plymouth in August 2002.

In retirement he worked to help restore a narrow gauge railway in North Devon, being a political organiser and activist and working as a landscape painter both in northern Scotland as well as Devon and Cornwall.
