FARMING is sometimes described as being the “backbone of the countryside”.

The structure of the Devon countryside is very much governed by farmland with farmers working to provide food for our nation and for export.

Local farms and farm shops providing us with good produce on our doorstep.

With Sustainable Farming Initiatives, farmers are encouraged to take extra care of the environment alongside their farming practices.

However, whether dairy, livestock or arable farming recent government changes make the future of the small family farm uncertain.

The unknown makes business and succession planning difficult.

Farming is a lifestyle and can be a very rewarding occupation but keeping up with changes and the normal stresses of farming can find farmers and their families needing extra help and support.

The Farming Community Network (FCN) is a charity supporting farmers and those working in agricultural, help is free and confidential.

Volunteers “walk with” those who seek support and help to find a way forward.

Farmers and agricultural workers benefit from meeting at the market or other social occasions.

The Annual Plough Service is an opportunity for the farming and rural community to meet, celebrate and look forward to the coming year’s planting and growing season.

Devon FCN is this year holding the service in conjunction with St Disen’s Church, Bradninch (EX5 4NS).

It will be held at 3pm on Sunday, February 9 and the speaker will be Rev Hazel Britton.
