THE share of council tax the average household pays Crediton Town Council is to go up by almost five per cent to £182.74 from April.
The local authority agreed the increase of 4.975 per cent for “band D” homes for the 2025/26 financial year when it met on Tuesday, January 21.
Councillor Frank Letch (Lib Dem, Crediton Lawrence) described the £8.66 rise as “not outrageous”.
In previous years, increases have been as high as 25 per cent in 2021/22, and 17 per cent in 2023/24.
Over the last decade, the town council’s share of a band D tax bill has almost tripled, with the amount just £61.08 in 2015/16 compared to the new figure of £182.74 for 2025/26.
The rise from April this year will raise £510,750 for the services Crediton Town Council provides, and for the support it gives to local agencies, charities and groups.
Mid Devon District Council and Devon County Council have not yet decided how much they will increase their portions for 2025/26, but the total council tax bill for the average band D household in Mid Devon this fiscal year, which runs until the end of March, is £2,404.17.
Devon County Council usually takes the lion’s share, with the remainder given to the district council, police, fire service and town and parish councils.
