THE popular Crediton Library Local History Day returns to the library building this year for the first time in two years, having moved online during the pandemic.

On Wednesday, July 6, attendees will be able to enjoy a range of fascinating talks from experts during the day, as well as browsing information stands from a number of museums and historical groups. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions both to the speakers and the museum professionals.

Tickets are just £5 for the whole day, or you can book for individual talks for £2 each. All money raised goes to support the work of the library.

On the programme are:

9.30am: Brian Carpenter from South West Heritage Trust, who will be discussing what a day in the life of one of their archivists looks like.

10.30am: Janet Few, North Devon based author and historian, and respected genealogist. Janet will be explaining the research that she undertook on a North Devon town in the 17th century for her historical novel “Sins as Red as Scarlet”.

11.30am: Author Liz Shakespeare will be talking about her novel “Song of the Skylark”, and Devon farming and chapel communities.

1.30pm: Mark Norman, folklore researcher and author, will be introducing the Folklore Library and Archive collections. The Folklore Library and Archive is housed in Crediton Library and is an internationally important collection of documents and physical materials relating to folklore and tradition.

2.30pm: Local historian Tony Gale will be giving a presentation on Devon Parish Taxpayers between 1500 and 1650, both in Crediton and elsewhere.

Information stands will be staffed by the Museum of Dartmoor Life, Devon Family History Society, Crediton Museum and the South West Heritage Trust and Tiverton Museum will be exhibiting local photographs.
