THE St Lawrence Group, based in Crediton, has supported Mid Devon District Council by helping to look after St Lawrence Green.
As part of the Love Park’s Week national campaign, the District Council is highlighting its positive partnership work with the St Lawrence Group, a passionate community group in Crediton.
The group joined forces with the Council during the first Covid lockdown in 2020 to ensure the green continued to thrive whilst the Council team were unable to attend to its maintenance.
In an effort to ensure the appearance and usability of their beloved green continues to be maintained, the St Lawrence Group actively contributes to essential tasks such as shrub pruning and caring for bedding flowers.
A special Silver Birch tree was also planted by members of the group to commemorate the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
As a result of this partnership, the group have organised a number of small events that have brought local residents together.
Its dedicated efforts have transformed the green into a beautiful, well-maintained public space, providing a vibrant and welcoming space for the community to enjoy.
In 2019, a local business also acquired previously disused toilets within the green and converted them into a gastro café to further enhance the amenities available.
The toilet provision was preserved as a requirement of the planning permission, ensuring convenience and comfort for all park visitors.
Paul Vincent, spokesperson for the St Lawrence Group, said: “Although we don't have any formal agreement with the local authorities, the group is encouraged by the help we have received from both district and town councils, with removal of waste material or to remunerate any costs associated with maintaining the flower beds.
“The on-going commitment from local residents in keeping the Green in good order can build a sense of mutual trust and confidence on both sides.
“St Lawrence Green is visible to many people approaching Crediton along the A377 so we are pleased to help create a good impression for the town."
With a view to the future, the St Lawrence Group is looking at further improvements that could be made to the green, these include installing a compost bin and, more ambitiously, restoring fencing that was originally removed during the Second World War.
Its reintroduction would not only return historical significance to the area but also contribute to its safety.
Councillor David Wulff, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure, said: “It’s truly inspiring to witness the St Lawrence Group’s commitment to enhancing their local area.
“Its efforts, combined with the Council’s support, are ensuring a vibrant and welcoming space for all. We are proud to collaborate with our community to ensure these great local successes.”
Other established community groups, town and parish councils who are looking to help bring community-driven projects to life in parks in their area are encouraged to contact the Council’s property services via email at: [email protected] , for support and guidance.
