FROM September 11 to 26, the public can visit more than 300 Devon artists and makers in their studios, homes and other venues.

The Crediton area alone has about 20 artists showing their work, which includes drawing, painting, bronze sculptures, ceramics, glassware and tapestry. There really is something for everyone.

The artworks can of course be purchased and after such a long period when physical galleries have been closed artists will be delighted to welcome people in person to their studios.

The full brochure of who is taking part in this year’s Devon Open Studios is available from: https://devonopenstudios.co.uk/DAN-Guide-020721-TH.pdf .

This gives details of every venue and maps of locations so that people can plan a trip around to see various artists.

The Open Studios booklets are in several shops and cafes in Crediton. You can also pick one up from Phil and Anne Smith, Glenthorne, Searle Street, Crediton EX17 2DB.

Ten artists are exhibiting at The White Room on Lords Meadow Industrial Estate. Here we look at the other artists in Crediton and nearby villages.

Charlotte Turner will be showing her art at her home studio in Coleford (Venue 17, EX17 5DG). Charlotte is a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists. A full-time practicing Artist for more than 20 years, her work is found in private collections nationally and internationally. Her paintings arise from solitary coastal exploration. Childhood memories of this sanctuary are rediscovered through adult eyes. Working up layers of paint and then rubbing them back is a smoothing process, revealing perfect imperfections.

Sculptor Antoinette Jackson will be showing her bronze and bronze resin figurative sculptures in Creedy Park, between Sandford and Crediton (Venue 19, EX17 4EB). Antoinette uses bronze to help remind people of precious moments in their lives and to relive joyful memories we all share.

Antoinette says: “The inspiration for my work comes from those special childhood moments filled with joy and wonder we can all relate to. I try to capture those feelings in the pose or a ‘look’.

“Sculpture which evokes these feelings means we can relive the moment all over again, putting joy and the sense of wonder back into the present for ourselves and the world around us.”

Anne Smith will welcome visitors to her pottery studio in Crediton (Venue 20, EX17 2DB), where she explores the use of different clays to create wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramics. These include seahorses, decorated bowls and platters, textured jars, and brightly glazed mugs. Bright glazes, especially layered blues and greens are a favourite for many of her most functional pieces. Plant leaves, trees and abstracted natural landscapes inspire the designs on her hand-built ceramics. Anne also paints abstracted seascapes, landscapes and trees that she will have on show.

Phil Smith will be showing his artwork in Crediton (Venue 20, EX17 2DB). Phil’s paintings can be found in homes and offices in the UK and internationally. Most of his work is colourful abstracts, which draw on memories from his travels in places like Morocco and Italy. His work also shows links to his work as a marine biologist. In addition to colourful abstracts Phil also paints street scenes and abstracted landscapes.

Monika Przerwa-Tetmajer will be showing her detailed marine life paintings in Crediton (Venue 21, EX17 3EJ). Monika paints mainly in acrylics or oils and recently created paintings of imagined undersea scenes with detailed marine life such as corals.

Tom Pawinski will also be exhibiting in Crediton at Venue 21 (EX17 3EJ). Tom does detailed drawings of animals and also some interesting Bauhaus style colourful abstract oil paintings.

Ruth Oakley is showing her art in Crediton (Venue 22, EX17 2BP). Ruth studied illustration at Exeter College of Art and then returned later to what became Faculty of Arts, Plymouth, to study Fine Art painting. She has worked as an artist for many years with many different community groups on large indoor and outdoor projects. Ruth now concentrates on her own paintings which are informed by her environmental observations, both celebratory and concerned.

Laurel Keeley will be showing her ceramics at her home studio in Newton St Cyres (Venue 24, EX5 5DH). Laurel has moved from her Exeter city centre studio, to Newton St Cyres, and is open to visitors for two weekends only during Devon Open Studios, showing stoneware ceramics. Visitors will be able to see a working studio, and browse through a collection of Exhibition work, pieces from her archive, colour experiments and various test pieces. Experimentation is endlessly ongoing; and you are invited to explore and handle the variable success.
