MID Devon District Council is asking people what they think of turning an old youth centre in Tiverton into a new “flexible workspace”.

The local authority is holding a public consultation from Thursday, July 25 to Monday, August 5 on plans to renovate the vacant building.

Expected to be open next spring, a concept design for the work hub has now been put together.

It features a reception area, a large open-plan office with space for around 20 desks, three smaller offices/ meeting rooms, a kitchenette, toilets, outdoor space for working and eating, secure bike parking and more.

The outdoor space would mean four car park spaces would be lost.

Funding has been secured for the project through the council’s Shared Prosperity Fund delivery plan.

“Previously a youth centre and community space, this vacant building provides an ideal location and set-up for a work hub,” a Mid Devon District Council spokesperson said.

“Strong demand for this type of facility has been identified, particularly from self- employed homeworkers, employees of larger organisations who often work remotely, small local start-up businesses and people who are visiting/ holidaying in the area that require reliable Wi-Fi to work.”

The council will hold two events soon for people to find out more and ask questions about the plans.

The first will take place on Thursday, July 25 from 4pm to 7pm at the Market Centre building in the Market Place car park in Tiverton.

The second will happen at the adjacent Pannier Market on Friday, July 26 from 9am to 1pm.
