COUNCIL tax bills for households in Mid Devon look set to go up from April.

Mid Devon District Council wants to put up its share of the total bill for a “band D” property by 2.99 per cent, the maximum it can without a referendum, to £239.12.

The council’s cabinet has backed the increase, but it will need to be ratified at the next full council meeting.

If councillors give the thumbs-up, the average band D household in the district can expect their total bill to rise by 4.87 per cent to £2,521.17 for the 2025/26 financial year.

The total amount of council tax collected is shared among Devon County Council, the police, fire service, Mid Devon District Council and parish and town councils.

Devon County Council’s share of a band D property’s tax bill looks set to go up 4.99 per cent to £1,801.26. The Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner will take £288.20, also a 4.99 per cent rise, and the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority £104.68, a 5.02 per cent increase.

Parish and town councils differ in the amounts they take. Crediton Town Council will charge the average band D resident £182.74 from April, a 4.98 per cent increase.

Meanwhile, Crediton Hamlets Parish Council will charge £19.09, Down St Mary £29.99, Newton St Cyres £41.90, Sandford £64.59, and Tiverton Town Council £77.73.

If all the changes are approved, people living in Crediton can expect their council tax bills from April to be £1,744 for band A properties (the cheapest), £2,616 for band D and £5,232 for band H (the most expensive).

Council tax bands are based on how much your property was worth in 1991.
